2014-2015 Lectures Program

Artisans of Time has an english lectures program on different Aspects of Mexico. The program started in 2009 in a partnership with the Instituto Allende. In 2014 the lectures program is made in partnership with the San Miguel de Allende´s Biblioteca Pública A.C.

The winter season (2014-2015) starts this December 2nd, with an 8 lecture program on Aspects of Mexico. All lectures are going to be held in the Biblioteca Publica Quetzal Hall, Tuesday at 3 pm

The entrance fee for each lecture is $100 pesos.

1. The eagle, the cactus tree and the name of Mexico in the       Aztec worldview
2. The Aztec Calendar Stone
3. The Route of Cortés
4. The Conquest of Mexico
5. The  Island of Tenochtitlan and the basin of Mexico
6. Guanajuato archaeological cultures and Cañada de la Virgen
7. Mexico, its revolutions and its present
8. Cossío del Pomar: the founder of Bellas Artes and the Instituto Allende.

The summer season (2014) starts in July with an 8 lecture Seminar on Pre-Hispanic Mexico. All lectures are going to be in the Biblioteca´s Quetzal Hall, Wednesday at 5 pm.

The Seminars Fee is $700 pesos for the 8 lectures.

The entrance fee for each lecture is $100 pesos.

1. Introduction to the cultural dynamics of Mexico and Mesoamerica. July 2nd.
2. The preclassic period: the olmecs, Cuicuilco and Monte Albán. July 9th.
3. The Classic period: Teotihuacan and the Mayas. July 16th. 
4. The epiclasic period: Xochicalco and Cacaxtla. July 23rd.
5. The postclassic period: Tula and Chichen Itzá. July, 30th.
6. The route of Cortés and the Conquest. August 6th.
7. The Popol Vuh, Sacred Book of the Mayas, August 13th
8. The sacred texts of the nahuas, August 20th.

 

Teotihuacan Field Trip

Teotihuacan was the great capital of Ancient Mexico, expanding its influence to cities like Tikal in Guatemala or Copan in Honduras. It is the place of the famous Sun and Moon pyramids.

Artisans of Time did one year fieldwork here, so we know the place.

We leave early in the morning from San Miguel and we return in the evening.

Let yourself be guided through the space and time of this unique mexican town by an anthropologist that decided to live in San Miguel because of its magic and deep cultural history … Transform yourself in an artisan and join us in the crafting of an «artesania de viaje», a travel handicraft, our joined field trip through San Miguel.

Our  co-created handicraft is a two-three hours walking tour around  San Miguel and its cultural history, from prehispanic San Miguel to present day.

 

Cañada de la Virgen Archaeological Site Field Trip

• Heritage interpretation by Mexican anthropologist and licensed tour guide.

Join us in a field trip to prehispanic Guanajuato and its cosmic cities. Cañada de la Virgen is a ceremonial site built around 500 a.d. The place and the surroundings were inhabitated for five centuries until 1100 a.d., when it was abandoned at the same time as other dozens of sites in the region.

At the center of the Cañada de la Virgen sacred landscape, the Cosmic Mountain, the House of The Thirteen Skies was built. From the top of this Temple, the horizon transforms into a calendar. The wisdom of Time mastered by the mayas, the Zapotecs, the Mixtecs and the Aztecs was also mastered by the founders of Cañada de la Virgen.

Walk with us through the archaeological site while we explore the relationships between this ceremonial site and other sites and cultures over Mesoamerica. Walk with us while we enjoy together the serenity and calmness of this prehispanic sacred site.

The field trip is leaded by Alberto Aveleyra, Mexican anthropologist. Alberto has a ten-year experience guiding througout Mexico and interpreting its heritage in different kind of projects.

His a lecturer and trainer on Mexican culture and history, heritage interpretation, destination management, Mexican archaeology, the Aztec calendar stone and tour guide performance. He lives in San Miguel de Allende.
